Class Design Exercises

The objective of this exercise was to create a page that imitates the style of Illuminated Manuscripts using Diminuendo. I used Procreate to create the illustrations and main calligraphic elements. I also wanted to do something a little more colorful than previous examples of this project because I found all of the pages in the Book of Kells to be quite vibrant. I then brought my illustration into Adobe Illustrator and added the body text as well as the textures. I took particular influence from the Book of Kells and German Blackletter Calligraphy.

The objective of this exercise was to design a poster in the style of a French Art Nouveau designer and illustrator, and I chose Jules Cheret.
I chose to advertise tarot cards since I wanted to replicate the action and motion that Cheret has in his work. I took many photos of myself in different positions holding the cards. I then created a collage of my photos to get the perfect pose and used it as a reference for my illustration. I also used a reference photo of a victorian dress since I did not have one handy. I used Procreate to illustrate the entire project and even hand-lettered the poster.

The focus of this exercise was to create a poster for the Show Us Your Type Challenge (2019) which focused on Athens. I wanted to use the Acropolis as my monument of focus for Athens without doing the typical Parthenon. I settled on using the Propylaea with the four Caryatids since they had interesting graphic shapes already. I re-created their basic forms in illustrator, then finished out the illustration with Procreate for the iPad Pro. I finished the text with Illustrator and added noise in Photoshop.

I used the unique typographic characters of Rodchenko's work as a jumping-off point in this piece and also made it the focus. The rest of
the composition was created around the 2019 and used a not as common secondary color, dull cyan, instead of the more expected black.
